In 1946 an artist named Nikolai Getman was sent to the Gulag. Getman's 'crime' was that he had been in a cafe with other artists, one of whom drew a caricature of Stalin on a cigarette paper. Getman tells his story about the suffering in the Gulag through a series of paintings.
